In 1985, Rotary and its partners made the commitment to eradicate polio from the face of the earth. In that year an average of over 400,000 children were stricken, with crippling effects, with the polio myelitis virus. From 125 countries in 1985 down to two countries in 2019 with active polio cases and some 100 cases reported, we are “this close” to the eradication of this horrible disease.

During the summer of 2020, the District Disaster Response Committee (DDRC) regrouped. Much had been learned since Hurricane Michael devastated the Mexico Beach area in Florida in the fall, 2018 and the EF-4 tornado that touched down in the Beauregard-Smiths Station area in Eastern Alabama in March 2019.

Update from District Governor Sam Adams

This week the Bahamas took a direct hit from category 5 Hurricane Dorian, with winds that reached 180 miles per hour. This storm has battered these islands and the rebuilding process will take years.

Grand Bahama Island has 5 Rotary clubs and is a valued part of Rotary District 6990. We will do everything possible to help them recover from the devastation.

What a great meeting March 12 for the Wetumpka Rotary Club!

On January 19th, 2019 a significant portion of downtown Wetumpka was destroyed by tornadic activity. Fortunately, there were no lives lost, but the property damage was severe and extensive, including the destruction of a 150 year-old church, many homes and the Wetumpka Police Fleet.
